GeneralThe division offers Ph.D. (Teknisk doktor) and Licentiate (Teknisk licentiat) degrees in both Computer Communications (Datorkommunikation) and Computer Science (Datalogi). Students normally are employed as a "doktorand", which is a paid position that includes a 20% teaching position. The rest of the student's time is spent on reseach and graduate courses. Below is a translation of the education information for our research areas. [Computer Science] [Computer Communications][University Requirements and procedures] Computer ScienceResearch Area DescriptionResearch in Computer Science focuses on the design, development and analysis of efficient algorithms and data structures applicable in areas such as networking, software implementation, and software development methodologies. Plan of StudyStudents devote at least 80% of their time to research and courses, working according to a personal study plan. A Lic. degree is possible after reaching 80 points - a substantial part of it must be obtained in courses that deepen previous knowledge in areas needed for a computer science research. A Ph.D. requires an additional 80 points. Approapriate level of knowledge must be demonstrated in all areas relevant to the topic covered in the doktors thesis. The Lic. research project must be at least 40 points and the Ph.D. research project must be at least 80 points. Cooperation on university projects, seminars, presenting research results at a sufficient number of conferences, and journal papers are required. Both degrees require a thesis. Required Qualifications and SelectionSelection and requirements are regulated by the "Antagningsordning för forskarutbildning", which are summarized in the "Forskarutbildningshandbok" and quickly summarized below. Additional Requirements: Completed master's degree in Computer Science or a related area (equivalent to at least 160 points) is required, as well as a special ability to pursue a scientific work and present results at an acceptable formal level. Additional Requirements for DefensesIn addition to the normal faculty regulations for research degrees, the following addition requirements apply. The Lic. degree (Licentiatexamen) defense is required to be assisted by an opponent from an outside research institution. The Ph.D. degree (Doktorsexamen) requires an opponent from an established Swedish or international research institution. Computer CommunicationsResearch Area DescriptionResearch in Computer Communications investigates the design, development, and analysis of network-based communications systems. Areas of studey include network architecture, routing, operating systems, program development, data structures, performance analysis, and simulation. Plan of StudyThe Ph.D. (Teknisk doktorsexamen) consists of 160 points of which at least 80 must be reseach. The coursework portion is usually between 20% and 50% depending on the students background and the form of the research. For the Lic. (Teknisk licentiatexamen), 80 points are required of which at least 40 must be research. Students normally receive a Lic. as part of the Ph.D. Required Qualifications and SelectionSelection and requirements are regulated by the "Antagningsordning för forskarutbildning", which are summarized in the "Forskarutbildningshandbok" and quickly summarized below. Additional Requirements: A completed master's degree (equivalent to at least 160 points) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a closely related area is required for acceptance as a research student.
